Act of God

Poem by Elena Williams

I have found that the only time I believe in God
Is when I am angry with him
In times of joy
I don’t tilt my head to the sky
To preach my thanks
It is only in moments of pain
When I am on my knees
Feeling closer to hell than heaven
That I allow his existence
And while I have never been religious
The cruelty of the Father
Might just change my mind
I curse his barbarity
And I condemn his apathy
I press my cheek to the floor
And beg for his comfort
And when it does not come
My words turn more vicious
I ask him how the world looks
From up there on his golden high horse
How he can witness mothers scream and children die
And yet stay compliment on his throne
“Is it because you are ashamed?”
“Is it because you are scared?”
He has yet to give me an answer.
