The Me of Ua

Poem by Maggie D. Brace

Ringed with joyous creatures,
pets encircle, adding sepia tones of memory.

Falling droplets bejewel me as I seek my freedom.
Am I able to move about my life?

A strange hunger engulfs me,
as aging slowly compresses my mind.

Dementia slowly sucks the me from us,
and the I of us slowly ebbs away.

Am I free at last to say goodbye?
No one knows, or is any the wiser.

Maggie D Brace, a life-long denizen of Maryland, teacher, gardener, basketball player and author attended St. Mary’s College.
