A Bottle of Love at Sea

Free Verse Poem by Ashley B

I'm a worn-out, stranded sailor at sea.
Drifting endlessly, aching to find home
The wind whispers in my ears to me to give up
The waves tosses my boat, telling me to give up
I cry out in fear begging the sea for mercy
It replies with a thundering boom and a flash of light

My boat begins to rock, frightened I clutch at my drenched map
The seas torment my boat endlessly, shaking me off my feet
Mist and spray begin to soak me through my bone
The sea tosses and toys with me, to its delight
I fetch for my compass, but I instead pull out a bottle of love
I toss it away hurriedly as it serves no purpose to me on this treacherous sea

But it begins to flutter around like a dazzling butterfly
Her power shines like a lantern in the midst of darkness
Like a shadow, she keeps me company
She sings a sweet melody; driving fear away
She sprinkles the night sky with stars to illuminate my path
My soul feels calm when her energy is around

She sends for huge whales who guide me through the angered sea
She cloaks me in a warm coat shielding me from the rain
She is made out of love from my dear family and friends
I’m not afraid of the sea no more, but instead crying out in joy
I can smell the salt and sand, and see a breathtaking sunset
Land appears ahead, a paradise at last

Love, she let me see the beauty of this misunderstood sea
Its waves don’t crash, but instead, rock me to sleep
Its rain doesn’t pierce but washes away my fear
Its clouds don’t gloom, but shield me from the scorching sun
This love became my glasses, letting me see in a new way
This love became my compass, guiding me the right way

  1. lovin it ! Must re-read & in its entirety !
decided suddenly to save a morsel or two
& ensure I had some music standing by or ambience

knew I was ‘shortchanging the read.. & the poetry’
yet some of it was already resonant .. felt true
but recognized it was me – not the poet or poetry

    What an excellent ‘find’ .. ! 🦎🏴‍☠️
