A History of Malice

Free Verse Poem by DJ Tyrer

It all began long ago
So long ago none remember details
Merely observe the effects
Of the final links in a chain
Ancient slights and cruelties
Having trained generations
To be cruel and evil
Passing on the lessons learnt
Ensuring the practices
Continue, are refined
An entire history of malice
Engraved upon the hearts
Of a generation
Unburdened by the guilt of original sin
Yet trapped just the same
In a cycle
Repeating the mistakes of the past
With the fresh vigour of the young
Invigorated with illusions of the novel
And their own irrefutable perfection
