Riding the Cycle of Life

Poem by Tami Darlene

Riding the cycle of life:

so many layers and levels of hurt and confusion

misunderstandings and brokenness

these humans

standing in the weaknesses, failures, and turmoil

sometimes never coming out of it

sometimes never rising above it

my fingers reach for theirs

I feel the brush of their skin for just a moment

that touch stored forever in a locked box of my memory

I knew them once and they were good

my fingers skim over their belongings left behind

textures rough leave sensations

colors captured in my mind's eye

on their behalf I am made stronger

I will not turn to dust

I will rise from the clay

from the damp deep pit

I will emerge

clutching their dearness

singing their names

their lives made glorious in me

as I live mine.
